Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the city, amidst the busy streets of Chinatown, Yisulang Art Gallery , home of contemporary Chinese fine arts, quietly occupies the upper two floors of a beautifully restored peranakan house in Pagoda Street, a few doors away from the Chinatown Heritage Museum.
The main directional focus of Yisulang Art Gallery is on creating an awareness of contemporary Chinese fine arts, on cultivating a familiarity, and an intimacy, between the audience and the art, bridging the stereotyped ideology that has erected a false barrier between traditionalism and modernism and, quite simply, eliciting a keen appreciation of the Chinese art of our era.
Yisulang Art Gallery's mission is to showcase the same great masters, up-and-coming artists and budding artists that are held in esteem, for example, by The Chinese Artists Association based in Beijing. Together, their work reveals the wide variety of Chinese traditions and themes, while each artist individually maintains his or her own technique and character and, of course, the essence of the artist that is encapsulated in each work of art. These artists present a panoramic view of contemporary painting from China; their work clearly communicates, with great originality, the vibrant life force within them, their artistic and academic principles, and their experience of life itself.
Yisulang Art Gallery has, over the years, made close contact with a wide range of people in China's art community - artists, critics, academics, exhibitors and collectors - and has established "artistic networks" in various parts of that great country. This has given the gallery a depth of experience with artistic trends and developments in China, which has allowed it to obtain a thorough understanding of the art world there.
